01

Separate river and bay ownership routines

Write down where the boat is now, where you intend to keep it and where you expect to sail. A river-based viewing does not demonstrate every aspect of your intended bay sailing. Compare the journey to the boat, berth access and the arrangements needed to reach your chosen sailing area with suitable local advice.

02

Build draft and access into the brief

Confirm the actual keel option and vessel dimensions from records, then discuss the intended base and operating area with the relevant marina and experienced local professionals. Use current charts and official information for navigation planning. This buying page does not establish depth, clearance or route suitability for a particular yacht.

03

Arrange local inspection and trial scope

Ask the surveyor and mechanic where the inspection and operating assessment can be completed effectively. Confirm lifting, trial attendance and who operates the yacht. If the boat is being sold remotely, obtain documents and specific photographs before travelling. Record what a restricted trial cannot demonstrate rather than treating the limitation as a pass.

04

Budget for destination readiness

Include any relocation, berth deposit or agreement, necessary repairs and familiarisation in the complete cost. Check Queensland registration and boating information through the official portal, and discuss your intended use with the insurer. Keep the storm preparation and unattended-vessel arrangements of your chosen base in the ownership plan.

Moreton Bay: settle the base and lifting plan early

A Brisbane search can cover boats with different access and operating arrangements. Write down the present berth, trial location and proposed home base as three separate entries. For a multihull, a berth enquiry and a lifting enquiry need the actual beam and loaded dimensions.

Published operator information, not a ranking or endorsement. Capacity, access, prices and availability require direct confirmation for your yacht.

Manly: distinguish monohull and multihull lifting

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron publishes a 35-tonne Marine Travelift and a 47-tonne Roodberg trailer, with the latter described for catamarans. Ask the yard which equipment and arrangements suit the particular yacht; a published weight capacity alone does not confirm fit.

A marina enquiry is separate from an inspection booking

RQYS publishes marina and boatyard facilities at Manly, with access for members and visitors. Obtain the current terms, costs, contractor requirements and dates for your enquiry. A boat already at the marina does not establish that a place is available to a new owner.

Match equipment to intended Queensland use

MSQ sets out safety-equipment requirements according to the boat and its operating area. Use the official tables against the exact vessel and proposed use; an inventory described as “complete” does not answer that comparison.

A practical enquiry sequence

  1. Shortlist

Record the actual keel option, beam and displacement from documents, then investigate the proposed base with its operator.

  2. Inspect

Agree what the trial can demonstrate from the present location. Record any restriction and required follow-up with the surveyor or mechanic.

  3. Take ownership

Use Queensland registration guidance, confirm insurance for the intended use and retain the agreed handover inventory.

Make the local enquiry concrete

  • Send the vessel’s exact dimensions, construction and intended use to the yard and surveyor.
  • Confirm access, inspection scope, written report timing and who operates the yacht.
  • Obtain a separate response about your proposed berth or mooring arrangement.
  • Keep preparation and delivery requirements separate from the sale timetable.

Use the survey briefing worksheet to keep those answers together.

4 QUESTIONS FOR THIS TOPIC

Brisbane and Moreton Bay: buying questions

Can I judge bay suitability from a river viewing?

A viewing helps establish layout and evidence. Assess the intended operating area, equipment and handling separately with relevant professionals.

Is draft only a sailing-performance question?

No. It also affects berth, yard and operating-area planning. Confirm the actual configuration and current local information.

Should I appoint a surveyor before flying to Brisbane?

After establishing suitability, coordinating professional availability can make the trip more useful. Keep time for follow-up findings.

Where should I check Queensland requirements?

Use the Queensland Government boating portal and Maritime Safety Queensland for current information applicable to your plans.
