The fee only makes sense alongside the scope.

Two proposals can describe a “pre-purchase survey” and cover different access, testing and reporting. Ask what will be inspected, how it will be assessed and what remains excluded. A tidy report cannot resolve an area the surveyor could not access.

Before arranging the inspection, understand the purchase agreement’s inspection conditions and deadlines. Allow time for the report, follow-up investigations and your decision.

Five questions before you appoint anyone

Does their experience fit this yacht?

Describe the construction, size, age and intended sailing. Ask about recent comparable assignments and request an anonymised report. Experience with one type of vessel is not evidence of experience with every construction or system.

Who is commissioning the work?

Make the appointment, intended purpose and report recipient explicit. Ask about relationships with the seller, broker or repair yard. A seller’s previous report can inform your questions but may have a different purpose, scope and date.

What is included, and what cannot be reached?

Ask about the vessel afloat and ashore, accessible structure, machinery observations, rig, sails and trial. Record access restrictions and the consequences of weather, equipment failure or an unavailable haul-out.

What can you verify about the professional?

Check claimed memberships directly and ask for current professional indemnity cover. Professional bodies cover different specialisms: use their directories as a starting point, then establish relevant recreational sailing-yacht experience.

What will the report let you do?

Ask when it will arrive, how limitations and priorities are recorded, and whether a follow-up discussion is included. Confirm the full fee, travel, haul-out, additional specialists and any return visit before booking.

Build the inspection team around the unknowns

These are questions to discuss with your surveyor, not a requirement to book every specialist. Avoid paying for overlapping work while leaving the important uncertainty untouched.

Fictional example · not a real survey report

“Further investigation recommended” is an open question.

Imagine a report records staining near a chainplate and says the backing structure was inaccessible. The observation is staining. The cause and the condition behind the lining are still unknown. Neither “it is only a leak” nor “the structure has failed” follows from that sentence alone.

  1. Separate observation from interpretation. Copy the report’s finding and limitation accurately.
  2. Ask what would resolve it. Discuss access, permission and the appropriate professional with your surveyor.
  3. Define the next piece of evidence. Record who will investigate, what they will deliver and when.
  4. Revisit the decision. Use the additional findings, scoped quotations and purchase conditions before deciding whether to proceed.

Common survey decisions

Can an insurance survey replace a pre-purchase survey?

Do not assume the purposes are interchangeable. Ask the surveyor to explain the proposed scope and whether it addresses your purchase questions. Separately confirm what your prospective insurer requires and whether it will accept the report.

Should I choose the cheapest proposal?

First make the proposals comparable. A lower fee may exclude the trial, travel or machinery work you need. Use the worksheet to identify gaps, then ask for a complete price for the agreed work. Price alone does not establish inspection quality.

What if the seller will not allow further access?

Record the restriction and ask the surveyor how it affects their conclusions. Discuss options with the seller and your adviser within the purchase agreement. An unanswered question remains part of your decision; a discount does not establish the condition behind an inaccessible panel.

Does a directory listing prove a surveyor is suitable?

No. Verify experience, credentials, insurance and scope yourself. Our YouSail shortlist is a starting point for enquiries, not a qualification check or a quality ranking.
