The short answer

Prepare the yacht, crew, handover and timetable for a delivery passage after purchase.

What you’ll work through

  1. Treat delivery as its own project
  2. Collect operating knowledge at handover
  3. Resolve cover and professional scope
01

Treat delivery as its own project

Set out the departure and destination, proposed crew, responsibilities and preparation tasks. Ask an appropriately experienced skipper to assess the plan where needed. A successful purchase survey does not automatically confirm readiness for a particular route or crew. Establish what must be repaired, demonstrated or learned before departure. Keep weather flexibility and waiting arrangements within the budget.

02

Collect operating knowledge at handover

Request demonstrations of normal systems, shut-offs, charging, fuel arrangements and relevant emergency equipment. Keep manuals, diagrams and keys together. Ask about known faults and recent changes. Write down information that would be difficult to recover once the seller leaves. Arrange professional familiarisation for unfamiliar machinery or systems rather than trying to discover their behaviour during the passage.

03

Resolve cover and professional scope

Discuss the intended delivery with the insurer and any engaged skipper, including crew, operating area and outstanding work. Clarify who provides equipment, provisions, berths, fuel and expenses. Agree how changes or delays are handled. Use suitable written terms and transaction advice when needed. A casual promise to “bring it home” does not define the whole responsibility.

04

Leave room to postpone

A date can organise preparation, but it cannot establish suitable conditions. Plan where the yacht and crew can wait and how work commitments affect the schedule. Confirm the latest weather and local notices through authoritative sources with the responsible skipper. Record any deferred repair and whether it prevents the intended use. Complete a short familiarisation outing where appropriate before treating departure as the next automatic step.

A BUYER’S DECISION

Work through an example

In an illustrative purchase, the new owner schedules an overnight delivery immediately after settlement. Familiarisation reveals an unfamiliar fuel-transfer arrangement and unresolved navigation equipment fault. The owner delays, obtains professional help and revises the plan with the skipper. The extra preparation is included in the ownership budget rather than hidden as a surprise.

4 QUESTIONS FOR THIS TOPIC

Plan your yacht’s delivery home: FAQs

Does a survey report approve a delivery passage?

Its conclusions apply to the agreed inspection scope. Discuss the actual passage, yacht preparation and crew with the relevant professionals.

Can I sail home immediately after settlement?

Only once the yacht, crew, arrangements and conditions are suitable. Payment is not evidence of readiness.

What should the seller demonstrate?

Normal operation, shut-offs, controls and the included equipment, with known faults and documents recorded.

How do I budget for delay?

Include storage, crew travel, accommodation and rescheduling where applicable, using the actual arrangement rather than a universal allowance.
